What is Faith?

According to the first verse of Hebrews Chapter 11, faith is "being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." It's possible that there is no other aspect of a Christian's life that is more vital than faith. We are unable to buy it, neither can we sell it nor can we gift it to our friends. The question now is, what exactly is faith, and what part does faith play in the life of a Christian? The meaning of the word "faith" in the Oxford English Dictionary is "believe in, devotion to, or trust in somebody or something, especially without logical proof." Additionally, it defines faith as "dedication to God in conjunction with confidence in God." The Bible has a great deal more to say on the topic of faith as well as the significance of it. In point of fact, it is of such critical significance that, if we lack faith, we have no standing before God, and it is impossible for us to win His approval (Hebrews 11:6). Faith, as defined by the Bible, is belief in the one and only real God despite not having direct experience with God.

Where does one obtain their faith? Faith is not something we conjure up on our own, something we are born with, something that comes as a result of being diligent in our study or pursuit of the spiritual, nor is faith something that comes as a result of our pursuit of the spiritual. It is made abundantly apparent in Ephesians 2:8-9 that faith is a gift from God and not something that we deserve, have earned, or are worthy to have because of our own merits. It does not come from us; rather, it comes from God. It is not possible for us to acquire it through our own power or free will. Faith, together with God's kindness and mercy, is simply bestowed upon us by God in accordance with His sanctified plan and purpose, and as a result, all the glory belongs to God alone.

Why should one have faith? Faith is the criterion that God used to differentiate between people who are a part of His family and those who are not a part of His family. To put it more simply, we cannot please God without faith. Even though we cannot see God, God tells us that it brings him pleasure that we believe in him anyhow. The verse Hebrews 11:6 tells us that "he rewards those who truly seek him," which is an important component of the verse. This does not imply that we have confidence in God with the sole purpose of receiving something from him. On the other hand, God is pleased to bestow his favor and blessings upon those who are faithful and obedient. Luke 7:50 provides an illustrative illustration of this point perfectly. When Jesus gives us a peek of why having faith may lead to such wonderful rewards, He is having a conversation with a sinful woman. "Go in peace; your faith has delivered you from harm." Because the woman had trust in Jesus Christ, He rewarded her for her commitment to following him. Last but not least, faith is what keeps us going till the end, with the knowledge that if we have faith, we will spend forever in heaven with God. "Even though you have never seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an indescribable and beautiful joy, because you are obtaining the objective of your faith, which is the salvation of your souls" (1 Peter 1:8-9).

Examples of having faith in God. The book of Hebrews chapter 11 is sometimes referred to as the "faith chapter" since it details numerous heroic acts of faith. By faith Abel presented a pleasing sacrifice to the Lord (v. 4); by faith Noah prepared the ark in a time when rain was unknown (v. 7); by faith Abraham left his home and obeyed God's command to go where he knew not where, then willingly offered up his promised son (vv. 8-10, 17); by faith Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt (vv. 23-29); by faith Rahab received the spies of Israel and saved her life (v (v. 31). "who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned into strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies" mentions many more heroes of the faith. "who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised" (vv. 33-34). It should come as no surprise that deeds constitute the best evidence for the existence of faith.

Faith is described as being fundamental to Christian belief throughout the Bible. We have no standing in God's presence until we can demonstrate that we believe and trust in him. The majority of people have an incomplete and hazy concept of who God is, but they lack the reverence that would be appropriate given God's elevated place in their life. These individuals do not have the genuine faith that is necessary to build a relationship with the God who loves them that will last forever. True faith goes beyond merely acknowledging that God does exist (James 2:19); rather, it entails placing one's entire life in the hands of the Bible and basing one's identity on what it says about God. There are times when faith might be wavering, but because it is a gift from God that He gives to His children, He allows us to experience times of testing and tribulation in order to demonstrate that our faith is genuine and to hone and develop it. Because the testing of our faith generates perseverance and maturity in us, offering the evidence that our faith is true, James urges us to consider it "pure joy" when we fall into troubles. This is because the testing of our faith produces perseverance and matures us (James 1:2–4).
